When Howie came to Good Omen Dog Rescue, he was in heartbreaking condition. This sweet senior had clearly been neglected for a very long time. He was covered in nearly 100 ticks, suffering from severe dental disease, advanced heart disease, significant anemia, and an enormous tumor that affected his comfort and quality of life. His white blood cell count was one of the highest our veterinarian had ever seen, indicating just how much his little body was struggling.

Despite everything he had endured, Howie remained gentle, loving, and eager for affection.

After entering our care, Howie immediately began receiving extensive veterinary treatment. He underwent diagnostic testing, treatment for his infections and anemia, and was started on medications to help manage his heart disease. As his condition stabilized, his bloodwork began to improve, giving us hope that he would be strong enough for surgery.

When Howie’s tumor suddenly began leaking and was at risk of rupturing, emergency surgery became necessary. Thanks to the quick action of his foster family and the expertise of Dr. Johnson at Sun City West Animal Hospital, the surgery was a success. In fact, Dr. Johnson shared that it was the largest tumor she had removed in her 22 years of practice.

Today, Howie is feeling better than he has in years. The massive tumor is gone, his anemia has improved significantly, and he is finally able to enjoy life without carrying the burden of that painful growth. He continues to be monitored and managed for his heart condition, but he is comfortable, happy, and soaking up all the love he can get.
